I still think the box-with-flag icon I’ve been using here is a better way to identify schools: http://teczno.com/openstreetmap/ (zoom in two steps)

Matt, I think a mortarboard would be perfect. I did some checking around with other providers of map iconography, and found a few mortarboards so the precedent is definitely out there.

I spent a while trying to figure out which religion 1+2=3 represented.

I thought grey was supposed to be “Religious points-of-interest”?

The museum icon looks a lot like the UCL logo http://ucl.ac.uk/ but I think this is just the shared architectural heritage of museums and universities.

How would a mortar board http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortarboard do? They’re not actually commonly used in the UK, but there are enough cultural references that it’d be recognised and understood. How about the rest of the world? Would it be recognised in the US and the rest of europe?

Can I request an icon for a university? Not fully sure what it would be… I’ve seen iconic representations similar to the museum one you’ve used above.
