Icons 0.3

More icons! And this time they’re PD licensed.
The fire station / department icon is now less suggestive. Unless you’ve got a really, really dirty mind
The police, convenience and synagogue icons have been touched-up to render better at 16×16.
Several new icons have been added:
- School: A chalkboard seems an obvious icon (although most schools probably use whiteboards now), with a simple sum on it. The alternative, using “ABC”, seems a bit latin alphabet centric.
- Hindu temple: Uses a PD “Om” symbol from wikimedia commons.
- Pastafarian: Just for laughs. According to tagwatch, we don’t actually have any… yet.
- Sikh temple: Uses a PD “Khanda” symbol, again from wikimedia commons.
- Pharmacies: Both dispensing and non-dispensing according to what seems to be the common convention.
- Post box: Its supposed to be a letter going into a slot, but it isn’t as clear as it could be.
- Telephone: This is a pretty standard-looking icon.
- Hotel: This is also pretty conventional, should be recognisable world-wide.
- Taxi rank: Represents a taxi cab… Given that a 16×16 icon is too small to use text, I hope that the car with a little “bump” on the top is recognisable in most countries.
Enjoy!

Without looking carefully the post box symbol looks like two notes, so I would think it was something to do with money.
Just the envelope, straight on, might be better.
Perhaps you need to emphasis the bump on the taxi a bit more, by making the window slightly smaller to give it space. I sort of know what it is, but I’m only familiar with the UK.

Looks really great (so does the licence!). Will have a go at incorporating them into Potlatch asap.

I’m in the process of adapting these for use in my Bay Area -specific OSM stylesheet, and I’m making two changes. I’ll be using small versions at low zoom levels for which I will remove the containing box, to shrink the visual size and make it easier to differentiate by silhouette. I’m also going to change the school icon to one that looks more like a little box or house with a pointy flag on top, a convention that I’ve seen widely used on U.S. road maps. The “1 + 2 = 3″ is a bit abstract, I thought maybe it was a Bauhaus logo when I first saw it. =) The transit ones are really excellent!

Can I make a request, btw? I’m in need of an icon for man_made=crane, ideally something derived from girl_rhino_crane_atat.jpg =)
