Icons 0.2

September 25th, 2008

I’ve done a little more work on a consistent, high-zoom icon set and here is release 0.2. Here’s a sample of what the icons look like, although its best to see them on a real map to get the full effect.

I know I’d like to see these on the map, which means they have to be tagged. At the moment we, as a community, aren’t doing very well at tagging things which aren’t rendered (but we’re very good at tagging things that are, e.g: pubs ;-) ). So, treat yourself and tag a nice restaurant today!

Update: I’ve had a special request for the airport icon without the shield, suitable for use at lower zoom levels, so here are the SVG and PNG files.

Looking good. Two comments: in the US, the police typically use a seven-pointed star. I’m not sure how this works in the rest of the world. Also, the fire dept. icon looks a little racy donchathink? =)

    Lovely!

Don’t suppose you’d consider rethinking the licence? OSM icons are traditionally PD… perfect for Potlatch, for which I’m working on drag-and-drop POIs right now. I’d very much like to use yours (currently I’m using 24×24s based on the svg-twotone set) if the licence were compatible.

    Osmarender renders restaurants.

Although the text is a little bit to far away, and you can see the known problem with POIs so close together.

You did quite a good job by making these icons. That is a really great idea to make a consisted icon-theme. It looks more professional then having different icons.
I was just thinking about some icons which I believe are very important and could be added:
    -schools / universities
    -pharmacies
    -post boxes
    -telephones
    -fuel stations
    -hotels

in the long run it would be awesome to get a full set of all map features and every six month there could be an update for new features or changes.
If one thinks this a little further we can think about a real icon theme. Together with a more dynamic Slippy Map where the icons are not rendered but put onto the map as a layer people would be able to change the look of the icons. Other people could step up and make there own theme which can be selected on the main page.

@Michal: I had a look at various countries’ police symbols and they seem to vary between 7 and 9 points. I couldn’t decide whether to do this, rather abstract, police design or to draw a pair of handcuffs… maybe the handcuffs would go better with the fire department icon :-)

I think the fire department icon is wholly appropriate to a bunch of guys who hang around waiting to slide down a big pole, unravel their hoses and squirt their nozzles all over the place. Or do I just have a dirty mind?

@ blackadder: Lol. I deliberately made them CC-BY-SA to be compatible with OSM. Is there any way to license them PD-compatible whilst keeping my right to be identified as the author?

@ bellboy: Yeah, those are all on the TODO list. Plus toilets, ports/piers, monuments, museums, nightclubs, clothing and book shops, taxi ranks and many more…

In general I prefer to make several distinct maps, each of which is designed for and well suited to a subset of users, rather than one customisable map which tries to be all things to all people. But feel free to use these icons on such a customisable map – that would be cool!
